A trial for cell-enhanced breast reconstruction using a patient’s own fat and the naturally occurring stem and regenerative cells found within fat is currently underway at the Singleton Hospital in Swansea. The regenerative stem cells are thought to promote blood vessel growth, helping the transplanted graft to survive. The procedure is aimed to address the needs of the three quarters of breast cancer patients who have a portion of their breast removed as a part of breast cancer surgery. The trial uses Cytori’s Celution® System, distributed in the UK by GE Healthcare. The cell-enhanced reconstruction trial is also taking place in Glasgow. www.dailymail.co.uk
